CITY COUNCIL
CHRIS HOLDEN
COUNCILMEMBER
DISTRICT 3
November 21, 2012
Dear Constituents:
Following this past year°s Independence Day, l heard from a number of you regarding illegal use of Fireworks in our neighborhoods, which is a serious concern. At my request, the City Council’s Public Safety Committee recently held a public meeting to discuss the issue along with top managers from the Police and Fire Departments. The issue was also a subject of discussion at my District 3 community meeting.
Every year, there is significant pubiic outreach regarding the legal consequences and fire and life safety ramifications of Fireworks purchase and use. Preventive measures are taken around the Rose Bowl and Arroyo area and “No Fireworks” signs are posted throughout the City. A press conference is held on an annual basis demonstrating the hazard associated with fireworks.
No fireworks are legal inthe City of Pasadena (City Ordinance. 6578 and Municipaì Code 14.30) and through a collaborative effort, the Fire and Police Departments have a “zero tolerance” policy. Because fireworks are more often heard than seen, enforcement is challenging, yet the visibility of police and fire vehicles and the Vigilance of citizens in reporting Violations is a deterrent.
I can reassure you that a public outreach campaign (media and community mailings) Will be implemented earlier next year and more non-traditional resources Will be used to help us instill the prohibition and consequences. These may include targeting a direct approach through schools (Police Safe Schools Team), ecumenical groups, ln-Focus newsletter, Police volunteers patrolling areas, City/District meetings leading up to the 4th of July, and empowering neighborhood associations to suggest and/or post NO FIREWORKS signs.
We have the advantage of planning several months in advance and welcome your suggestions and input. Please Contact Jacqueline McIntyre at (626) 744-4738 if you have any questions or recommendations to include in our 2013 planning.
Cordially
