Hi NAG-ers!
Melissa had a meeting to discuss the future of NAG, and perhaps formalizing it. We'd like to meet with you, who we consider to be the core group, or co-founders to discuss this further. Are you interested? We don't want to loose momentum on any front, however, if we want to be taken seriously we may need to formalize our group. Here are some of the items we discussed:
1. Professionalize NAG: What does that look like? A 501(c)3? A 501(c)6? A social entrepreneur organization?
2. These series of questions lead us to ask what are our specific goals, long and short term? Are we advocates only? Do we want to be able to get grants, have membership? If we are a 501(c)3, does that hamper our ability to lobby or advocate, at all? We need a mission and vision statement as well as goals. Then we can decide what is best for us, in terms of type of organization. I can help us develop these items through a facilitation.
3. We definitely want to leverage social media and have a website to get attention for our issues and be a community resource.
4. We definitely want the our community to come to us to voice concerns and have a well-oiled advocacy machine that gets attention from government entities. Perhaps we can be a liaison between our the citizens of NW and government entities. Perhaps we have a toolkit for those who want to advocate for their own issue.
5. We should map our communities' issues and resources- that means understanding the history and the players, especially meeting property owners and keeping close to our district reps.
Melissa offered to look into what the different government status options we have. I am researching different advocacy organizations to see if there is something out there that suits. If you are interested in going further with this, please respond to this email. We'd like to schedule a meeting, perhaps on a weekend or week night in the next couple weeks. Who can host? Or shall we meet at Nextdoor Cafe?
Sinceramente,
Cybele :}
Proud to be a NAG-er!
